Private investigator Jackson Douglas is something of a ladies' man, but this is getting ridiculous:
Ryan shows up at Jackson’s house drunk, thinking he’s Douglas Jackson—who was just found murdered under the Manhattan Beach Pier. Jackson invites her to stay with him until he can find out who killed Douglas Jackson and why—and what Ryan’s connection is to the murder. But she seems more interested in seducing him than revealing anything about her past.
Stephanie is being abused by her husband when Jackson chances upon her and rescues her. She has nowhere else to turn, and he promises he’ll take care of her. But the situation doesn’t seem to have any plausible solutions, and the longer Jackson harbors a married woman, the more he starts to question his motivations.
Marissa arrives at Jackson’s house seeking shelter from a boyfriend she fears is trying to kill her. Less than 24 hours earlier, that boyfriend had hired Jackson to find her. Sorting out fact from fiction entangles Jackson in a case of corporate espionage with national security at stake.
Relying heavily on a female detective who owes him one and a female journalist with a knack for getting at the facts—and getting under his skin—Jackson puts in long hours in an effort to create three happy endings. What effect will failure have on Ryan, Stephanie, and Marissa? And what toll will success take on him?
